Homework 03.11.25 – 07.11.25

Mild Tasks:

Reading: The History of Halloween

Halloween started a long time ago, over 2,000 years ago. People in Ireland and Scotland celebrated a festival called Samhain at the end of October. They believed that on this night, spirits of the dead could visit the living. People lit bonfires and wore costumes to scare away these spirits.

When the Romans came, they mixed their own celebrations with Samhain. Later, Halloween became part of Christian traditions and was linked to All Saints’ Day, which remembers saints and holy people.

Many of the Halloween customs we know today come from these old traditions. Carving pumpkins, wearing costumes, and going trick-or-treating all have roots in these early festivals. Over time, Halloween spread to other countries, especially the United States, where it became very popular.

Today, people celebrate Halloween by having fun, dressing up, and enjoying spooky stories. Even though it is now mostly about fun, Halloween has a very long history that goes back thousands of years.

Questions

  1. Where did Halloween start over 2,000 years ago?
  2. What was the name of the old festival celebrated in Ireland and Scotland?
  3. Why did people wear costumes at Samhain?
  4. What Christian day is Halloween linked to?
