P5A Home Learning (Mrs Hunter)

Homework 23.01.26

Mild Tasks:

Reading: Read (or get an adult to help if you need to) the facts below about school in Victorian Times. What was it like to be at school at that time?

Facts About Victorian Schools

  • The school regime was extremely strict and the school day was very long, sometimes lasting until 5 p.m.
  • Any windows in the classroom tended to be high up, making it impossible for pupils to see out.
  • Teaching was monotonous with little variation. The children would sit in rows, in silence, and watch the teacher write on the blackboard. They’d then copy down what the teacher had written.
  • The main subjects that children learned were Reading, Writing and Arithmetic (known as the 3 ‘R’s’).
  • There was a huge emphasis on rote learning. For example, children had to chant the times tables until they knew them.
  • Boys and girls were segregated for some subjects: girls would study needlework while boys studied woodwork.
  • Children used a slate to write on, which could be wiped clean. They might also use a quill pen , which was dipped in ink from an ink well on the desk.
  • Classrooms were generally poorly equipped: there might be a map of the world or an abacus .

Listening and Talking: Talk to someone at home about what life was like in a Victorian School. Discuss the similarities and differences between school then and school now.

Writing Task: Create a Venn diagram about the similarities and differences between a school in Victorian times and a school now.

Homework 16.1.26 – 23.1.26

Mild Tasks:

Reading: Read the passage below about Family Life during Victorian Times:

What was family life like?

If you were born into the Middle or Upper classes in the Victorian era, you would usually have been brought up by nurses and governesses.

Parents didn’t always have much contact with their children. Men were expected to earn the money, while women took charge of running a household.

Manners and respect were of great importance during this time, and children would mainly address their father or other males as ‘Sir.’

Children were expected to be well-behaved and respectful, with strict discipline and education a crucial part of their upbringing. A typical quote during this time was, ‘ Children should be seen and not heard.’

Religion was also important during the Victorian era, with Christianity playing a central role in society. Church attendance was high, and religious values were often reflected in politics.

Listening and Talking: Talk to someone at home and find out if the know the meaning of these 5 Scottish words:

Address to Edinburgh

By Robert Burns

1. Edina! Scotia’s darling seat!

All hail thy palaces and tow’rs,

Where once beneath a Monarch’s feet,

Sat Legislation’s sov’reign pow’rs!

From marking wildly-scatt’red flow’rs,

As on the banks of Ayr I stray’d,

And singing, lone, the ling’ring hours,

I shelter in thy honour’d shade.

2 Here Wealth still swells the golden tide,

As busy Trade his labours plies;

There Architecture’s noble pride

Bids elegance and splendour rise:

Here Justice, from her native skies,

High wields her balance and her rod;

There Learning, with his eagle eyes,

Seeks Science in her coy abode.

3 Thy sons, Edina, social, kind,

With open arms the stranger hail;

Their views enlarg’d, their lib’ral mind,

Above the narrow, rural vale:

Attentive still to Sorrow’s wail,

Or modest Merit’s silent claim;

And never may their sources fail!

And never envy blot their name!

Numeracy
