Using a Newton Meter
A Newton meter is a piece of scientific equipment used to measure force. It is sometimes called a force meter. Forces are pushes and pulls, and they are measured in units called newtons (N).
Inside a Newton meter there is a spring. When you pull on the hook at the end of the meter, the spring stretches. The scale on the side shows how much the spring has stretched. The further the spring stretches, the bigger the force being used.
To use a Newton meter correctly, you should hold it steady and read the scale at eye level. This helps you get an accurate measurement. If the meter is tilted or you look at it from above or below, you might read the scale incorrectly.
Newton meters are useful in investigations. For example, you can measure how much force is needed to pull a shoe across different surfaces such as wood, tile or carpet. This helps us learn about friction and how surfaces affect movement.
Scientists and engineers use Newton meters to test materials, check safety and compare forces. Measuring forces carefully helps us make fair tests and reliable conclusions.
