Mary, Queen of Scots became queen when she was just a baby in 1542. She spent much of her childhood in France and later returned to Scotland to rule. Mary was a Catholic in a country that was becoming mainly Protestant, which caused tension and conflict. Her marriages and political decisions led to unrest, and she was eventually forced to give up the throne to her son, James. Mary fled to England, where she was imprisoned by her cousin, Queen Elizabeth I, and later executed in 1587 after being accused of plotting against the English crown.
